The Ashanti Regional Fire Commander, ACFO Peter Tetteh has explained what caused the rapid spread of the fire which engulfed the China City mall in Kumasi on Thursday, October 30, 2025.
Speaking to the media after the Fire Service has doused the inferno, Mr. Tetteh said the whole building was affected by the fire due to the combustible materials in the mall as well as the poor s
“The combustible materials that they sell over here including the structure itself made it very possible for fire to spread very very fast. For now, the whole building has been engulfed.
“If you check the building there are so many cracks and secondly the structure has tilted which is very dangerous,” he explained.
A fierce fire broke out on Thursday, October 30 at the popular China City Mall located around Santasi roundabout area in Kumasi.
The blaze, said to have started around 3pm has caused major damage to property and goods worth millions of cedis.
The facility opened less than 6 months ago has been completely razed by the fire.

Eyewitnesses say the fire begun from one of the external shops and spread rapidly through the mall, which houses numerous businesses primarily dealing in imported Chinese goods, including electronics, clothing, and household items.

Fire fighters from different stations quickly moved to the scene to battle the inferno for hours before bringing it under control.
Their efforts were reportedly hampered by the intensity of the fire.
