A tragic road accident has occurred at Suame, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti region, leaving a commercial motorcycle rider, popularly known as ‘okada‘, dead, after being run over by a trailer truck on Saturday, January 3, 2026.

The incident reportedly took place in the afternoon, causing panic among residents and commuters in the area.

Eyewitnesses at the disaster scene described a horrific situation, stating that the trailer ran over the okada rider, killing him instantly. The victim, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, was severely injured at the scene, and emergency responders were unable to save him. Traffic in the area was temporarily disrupted as authorities arrived to manage the situation and clear the road.

Accidents involving motorcycles and heavy vehicles are common in Ghana, particularly in urban areas with heavy traffic.

Road safety experts emphasize the need for both drivers and riders to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent such disasters.

Factors such as reckless driving, overloading of motorcycles, and lack of protective gear are frequently cited as contributors to fatal accidents.

Residents in Suame expressed shock and sadness over the incident. “It was very sad. One moment he was riding, the next moment the trailer had hit him. It’s a reminder for all road users to be careful,” an eyewitness told us.

The source said, Ghana Police Service has begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. They are expected to examine whether the trailer driver was negligent or if traffic rules were violated. Authorities also encourage witnesses to come forward to provide statements that could help with the investigation.

The incident has sparked conversations within local communities about road safety, responsible driving, and the urgent need to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
