Communications Expert and Lecturer at the African University College of Communications (AUCC), Peter Wonders, has called on Ghanaians to use major sporting events like the World Cup as platforms to promote the country beyond football.

According to him, Ghana must seize such global moments to showcase its culture, products, and innovations, ensuring the world remembers the nation for more than its football talent.

“Let’s go and sell the country so that after the World Cup it won’t be business as usual. We do a lot in this country, and we must drive attention to those things during occasions like football,” he said on Yɛn Nsempa Morning Show on Onua FM on October 13.

He recalled that during the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, Ghana missed a vital opportunity to project itself internationally. “If we had used that moment well, it could have expanded our economy and created a wider job market,” he noted.

Linking his point to current government initiatives, Mr. Wonders highlighted that President John Mahama’s 24-hour economy agenda provides the perfect backdrop to leverage such events for national promotion.

He further proposed simple yet impactful ways to market Ghana’s identity for instance, distributing Ghana-made chocolate to foreign players and visitors during international tournaments.

“Some countries don’t even know we produce chocolate here. Let’s not only go and play football, let’s sell Ghana,” he emphasized.

His comment comes at the back of Ghana sealing its place at the 2026 World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Comoros in their final Group I qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, October 12.
