As Ghana prepares for the FIFA World Cup, football supporters in the Northern Region are calling for greater inclusion in national supporter activities tied to the global showpiece.

The Northern Regional Football Supporters Union (NORSSU) has appealed to the Ghana Football Association and the leadership of the national supporters’ movement to allocate dedicated slots to members from the region.

Speaking at a press conference, NORSSU Chairman, Mohammed Baako Alhassan, said supporters in Northern Ghana have consistently demonstrated unwavering loyalty to the national teams and should not be overlooked when such opportunities arise.

“We humbly appeal that supporters from this region are given their fair share of any slots allocated,” he stated.

Inclusion and national unity

Mr. Alhassan stressed that fair representation is not only about participation but also about strengthening national unity.

According to him, football remains one of the strongest unifying forces in Ghana, and equitable access to global tournaments ensures that all regions feel represented.

He further called for a transparent and balanced system for allocating supporter slots one that reflects the geographical diversity of Ghana’s fan base.

Call for experience in the squad

Beyond supporter participation, NORSSU is also advocating for experience within the national team. The union is urging the technical handlers of the Ghana national football team to consider recalling André Dede Ayew ahead of the tournament in the United States and Mexico.

Mr. Alhassan noted that Ayew’s experience could serve as motivation for younger players and add depth to the squad.

He also appealed to traditional leaders in Northern Ghana to support the call, emphasizing the need to recognise and motivate players both male and female while they are still active.

Support from Keepfit Club

The call for inclusion has received backing from other groups in the region. National Vice Chairman of the Keepfit Club, Mohammed Zakaria, described football as a powerful tool for unity that transcends religion and cultural differences.

He said the club fully supports NORSSU’s appeal and urged football fans and retired players in the region to rally behind the demand for fair representation.
