The Bank of Ghana’s latest Summary of Economic and Financial Data has disclosed that Mobile money transactions in Ghana reached GH¢354.1 billion in August 2025.

The transaction reflects the sustained dominance of mobile payments in Ghana’s financial sector, despite the figure being marginally lower than the GH¢355.4 billion recorded in July.

According to the Bank of Ghana’s data, mobile money transactions for the period increased from GHC778 million in the previous month to GHC831 million in August. It said registered mobile money accounts rose to 77.7 million, with 25.1 million classified as active.

Also, there are currently 938,000 mobile money registers with 433,000 of them being active, according to the report. The growth in transaction volumes, alongside rising account activity, according to finance analysts, demonstrates growing confidence in digital financial services as a tool for payments, remittances, and business operations.

Mobile money interoperability also gained ground, with transaction values climbing to GH¢4.9 billion in August, supported by 26.4 million cross-network transfers.

Despite macroeconomic challenges, including currency fluctuations and fiscal pressures, the central bank noted that mobile money continues to drive financial inclusion, expand employment opportunities, and improve tax revenue collection.

According to the BoG, the surge in mobile-based payments has also helped reduce risks associated with cash transactions while expanding access to credit through mobile lending platforms.

The report reaffirmed mobile money’s central role in Ghana’s transition towards a cash-lite economy, underscoring its position as the backbone of the country’s digital financial ecosystem.
