Reports reaching OnuaOnline indicate the new Kejetia Kumasi Market is going to be closed down Thursday afternoon, March 16, 2023.

The closure follows the burning of the place Wednesday afternoon which destroyed goods worth millions of Cedis.

Speaking on Maakye Thursday morning, Host of Ghana Maadwo on Akoma 87.9FM, a subsidiary of the Media General Group, JB, indicated the city authorities will be shutting down the market by midday.

“There are two people from the KMA and one at the market who take ₵100,000 every week. One takes 40k, 10k and and another 50k. Captain, the burning of the market is not the sad thing here but rather that the market has not been insured. If I had any power the accountant would go to jail because when we asked him why he hasn’t insured the market he said the electricity bill arrears was his priority and they didn’t even pay the bills,” he alleged.

Background

The redeveloped Kejetia market has now been shut down temporarily after fire engulfed part of the facility Wednesday afternoon.

It took the Ghana National Fire Service more than 3 hours before bringing the fire under control.

The thick smoke that bellowed the market made it difficult for fire fighters to see clear.

In an attempt to escpae from the fire, victims had to risk their lives and descend from the top floor using an improvised rope made from tying pieces of cloths together.  One woman fell in the process.

The entire place has been cordoned off Thursday morning with heavy security presence.
