The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) does not need a poll to know Ghanaians are dissatisfied with their performance, considering the rate at which their numbers are dropping for independent presidential candidate, Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen.

Prof. Kobby Mensah of the University of Ghana has cautioned that, instead of the party criticising the credibility of surveys, particularly the latest one from Global InfoAnalytics, they should rather look at what is causing the decline in their figures after the exit of a key personality like Mr. Kyerematen, which is likely affecting their following.

Speaking on Ghana Tonight Monday, April 08, 2024, the Political Marketing Analyst indicated that Alan Kyerematen’s performance from recent surveys are cleary coming from the camp of the NPP and they will be deceiving themselves to say that his exit is not causing them any misfortune.

“They are not being very objective and they are not being fair to themselves if they actually listen. I don’t even think that you will need a poll to tell you what the feeling of the people is. Of course, poll is very relevant in our line of work and I applaud Global InfoAnalytics for doing it but for NPP, I don’t think that you need anybody to conduct a poll to tell you.

“Common observation of the people’s sentiments in religious institutions, in the corridors of work, on the streets, you should know that they are not happy with you. So instead of bastardising a poll and saying that Alan’s exit is insignificant, of course, they may be telling us this but in the backdoor they are worried about that but they do not want to admit it in the public so that, it sort of impact the feeling of their followers,” he explained.

He explained that the NPP doesn’t want to admit the implications of Alan’s exit because “one of the qualities of a political leader is to ensure that you do not let your followers be apathetic or feel disheartened by what’s happening.”

His comments stem from the latest national opinion poll organised by the Global InfoAnalytics for the 2024 presidential election which placed the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) John Dramani Mahama ahead of the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, with Alan Kyerematen following as a potential third force.

The survey report “shows the ruling party’s candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia (DMB) trailing the main opposition candidate, John Dramani Mahama (JDM) in the race to lead the country in 2025. The poll shows JDM leads with 54.3%, DMB, 34.9%, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen (AKK), 7.5%, Nana Kwame Bediako, 2.3%, others, 1%.”
