The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has opened nominations today, Wednesday, May 31, 2023, for the Assin North upcoming by-election in the Central region. 

A declaration by Parliament that the Assin North seat is vacant following a Supreme Court ruling to expunge then Member of Parliament for the constituency, James Gyakye Quayson’s details from the House’s records has necessitated the NPP primary.

By a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court ousted the MP from the House on May 17, 2023 after a prolong hearing on his citizenship.

In a statement signed by Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party’s General Secretary on May 30, he said the polls will take place on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, after nominations have been opened today and closed tomorrow, Thursday, June 1. He added that the forms will be available at the constituency party office for purchase.

The NPP is holding a primary for the by-election following a resolve made at a Steering Committee (SC) meeting held Tuesday, May 30, 2023.

“The New Patriotic Party, at its Steering Committee (SC) meeting held on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, approved the following timelines for holding the parliamentary primary election at Assin North for the by-election:

Opening of Nominations: Wednesday, May 31, 2023

Closing of Nominations: Thursday, June 1, 2023

Election: Wednesday, June 7, 2023
