The candidacy for the flagbearership slot of the ruling New Patriotic Party is not a “two horse race,” says Prof. Samuel Adu Gyamfi, a senior lecturer at the Political Science department of KNUST.

He says it is projectively erroneous for anyone to reduce the race between Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and Trade Minister Alan John Kyerematen who recently resigned.

According to Prof. Adu Gyamfi, Assin Central legislator, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, is a force to reckon in the upcoming primaries despite certain political flaws he has made in the past.

He admitted that despite Dr. Bawumia leading his contenders currently, it does not take anything away from the others.

“…And so he (Vice President Bawumia) has seized the opportunity of being who he is maybe with some sense of charisma and the sense of the office he holds and all that to push himself to the forefront.

“In a way, it is not necessarily a two horse race. He the Vice President seem to be in the lead and that is why I said I think he is going to win,” he said on TV3’s Midday Live Friday, January 6, 2023.

Meanwhile, Prof. Adu Gyamfi believes apart from the Veep’s own efforts, the NPP is ready to break their “first come first serve” tradition to place Bawumia ahead of Alan in the primaries.

“We’ve learnt that the NPP has followed some particular tradition – ‘first come, first serve’ — basis to elect their leaders. That is the reason why Mr. Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen would lose several times against his elders.

“It seems to me that around this time they want to change the narrative and rather provide a levelled playing field for all. Because if they were going to follow the old narrative to elect leaders, then Mr. Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen ought to have been the one they would definitely go for but it doesn’t seem to be the narrative around this time,” he indicated.
