In October 2021, in a rather rare style, President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo teased Trade Minister John Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen after introducing him to the Asantehene as an aspirant of the NPP flagbearership.

“One of my ministers, he has been nursing his presidential [ambition] for a very long time (amidst laughter from the crowd), Minister of Trade and Industry. He is very workaholic” President Akufo-Addo told the Asantehene.

Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen is a founding member of the ruling New Patriotic Party.

He first served as Trade and Industry Minister under John Agyekum Kufuor’s administration.

Calls for his resignation to focus on his presidential ambition has been rife from a section of the NPP supporters.

“I am happy that Alan has finally stepped down” -Nana Prempeh told our Northern Sector Bureau Chief William Evans-Nkum.

Another NPP activist, Abraham Boadi rather wants the former Trade Minister to officially state his intent of running for the flagbearership of the ruling NPP “although, he has resigned he hasn’t officially stated he would run for the flagbearership. He has to do that.”

Mr. Kyerematen was also in charge of one of the government’s major flagship policies, the One District One Factory which according to many Ghanaians failed.

To many, the success of the policy would have greased Mr. Kyerematen’s chances of becoming the NPP touch bearer for the 2024 polls and even going into the general elections.

NPP faithful and many Ghanaians are awaiting his official announcement to run for the flagbearer of the NPP.
