Some names are already popping up for the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prepares for the 2024 general elections.

The party elected amongst four aspirants, the Vice President, as its presidential candidate to lead them for the December 2024 polls.

Even before the primary was held, some names had started coming out as possible partners to Dr. Bawumia to help the NPP ‘Break the Eight’.

However, Professor Ransford Edward Van Gyampo of the University of Ghana has called for a halt to the campaigns for possible persons who can be his running mate.

Speaking on TV3’s News Central Wednesday, November 8, 2023, the Professor of Political Science at Ghana’s premier university held that the name suggestions and rumours making rounds should stop for Dr. Bawumia to independently decide on whom to select.

According to him, he should be able to find someone who is competent and someone he will be comfortable working with.

“Let Bawumia look for who can comfortably and competently support him and he who Bawumia is very comfortable working with,” he told Keminni Amanor.

Amongst the names coming out include Majority Leader of Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu; Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Education Minister and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe and Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, Manhyia South legislator and Minister of Energy.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayokor Botchwey’s name also came up along the way and when quizzed on it during the party’s super delegates’ conference, she said she was going to make consultations to arrive at a decision if considered for the portfolio.
