Traders and passengers have expressed serious concern over worsening sanitation conditions at the Sofoline Lorry Terminal in the Kwadaso municipality of the Ashanti region.
Speaking on Ghanakoma morning show on Akoma 87.9FM in Kumasi with Sir John, on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, some traders and passengers said filth is steadily engulfing the terminal, with piles of uncollected refuse in dustbins raising serious health concerns for both drivers and passengers.
This situation, according to them, poses a threat to progress toward Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 on Good Health and Well-being, as well as SDG 6 on Clean Water and Sanitation.
The Sofoline Bus Terminal is one of the busiest transport hubs in the Ashanti region, serving hundreds of passengers daily.
But, the poor sanitation conditions have rendered the facility both unattractive and unsafe, undermining efforts to achieve SDG 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities.
Food vendors and others who spoke to Akoma FM said the environment poses a threat to their livelihood.
They lamented that refuse from uncollected dustbins often scatter across the terminal, worsening the situation.
“It is worrying that I sell food in the midst of filth and poor sanitation at this terminal. The managers here used to get people to clean this place, but I don’t know what has changed now and why the bins are not being emptied,” a food vendor said.
Passengers share similar concerns and are calling for swift intervention to protect public health.
One of the passengers, Kwasi Amankwa, who gave us information on the issue, said: “We are prone to so many health risks considering the poor sanitation at this facility. So the authorities should step in and address this issue.”
The Kwadaso Municipal Chief Executive, Eric Assibey, who contributed to the show, admitted the sanitation challenge and acknowledge its potential health implications.
He indicated that the Assembly is doing everything possible to address the issue but blamed occupants of the facility on indiscriminate dumping in the area.
He assured residents that measures are being put in place to address the situation.
He acknowledged the need to improve the sanitation situation at the terminal and said the Assembly has engaged some people to always clean the place.
Mr. Asibey assured that he will get in touch with Environmental Officers at the Assembly to ensure the sanitation situation at the terminal is improved.
