The Revenue Protection unit of the Electricity Company of Ghana(ECG) has re-arrested an imposter who was arrested on June 11 2022 for parading himself as staff of the company.

He has been extorting monies from customers after tampering their metres to reduce cost being owed the company.

Gideon Kwame Otto, Acting Manager from the Revenue Protection of the company explained that, the culprit, Christian Asare, and his accomplices created their own company aside ECG and was arrested at Apotuogya in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region. He was arraigned for court but was on inquiry bail.

According to the ECG, this is the second arrest of Christian Asare.

He was first arrested on a similar offence at Kronum in the Afigya Kwabre South District with two other accomplices named Wofa Yaw aka Pensioneer and I.K. Acheampong who are currently at large.

Asare and his accomplices themselves as staff of the company to extort money from one Edmund Yeboah, a customer of ECG.

In an interview with Onuaonline, the Acting Ashanti Regional Director of Revenue Protection Unit, Gideon Kwame Otto, stated that, the culprits went to the house of the victim to refix the metre at a cost of Gh¢6,000.00.

Police intelligence led to the arrest of the culprit.

”Through the intelligence of the son of the victim who was suspicious about their identity used his phone and video snapped them for verification for the ECG. He helped the investigators to arrest Christian Asare while his accomplices are on the run.

”I’m appealing to the public to feed us with credible information on such situations. Their activities are affecting the revenue base of the company,” he said.

The Communication Officer of ECG, Sampson Boateng, disclosed that, the company is doing everything possible to bring the fraudsters to the attention of the public.

He entreated the general public to be cautious of any visitor who comes to them under the guise of ECG staff.

He appealed to the customers to do vigorous checks to authenticate the identity of such persons before engaging them officially.

”I am pleading with the public to help the ECG with accurate information about Wofa Yaw alias pensioner and the I. K Acheampong to bring them out to face the full rigours of the law in their quest to flash such dubious characters from the system to enable ECG provide a reliable and efficient power supply to their customers. Their actions are destroying the image of the company and gradually making the public not having confidence in them,” he said.
