The Ghana Police Service has intercepted 11,292 vehicles across all 25 police regions as part of a nationwide crackdown on unauthorised sirens and strobe lights.
In the Ashanti Region alone, 1,736 vehicles had been intercepted as of Monday, August 10,2026.
ACP Alexander Kwaku Obeng, Director in Charge of Education, Research and Training at the Motor Traffic Transport Department (MTTD) told journalists in Kumasi that the vehicles fitted with sirens without the required authorisation are operating unlawfully and must be removed immediately.
The exercise, which has been ongoing for about a month, is aimed at enforcing regulations on the use of sirens and strobe lights on vehicles.
He said the operation, carried out at the Airport Roundabout, Santasi Roundabout, and other parts of the country, targeted the illegal use of sirens, strobe lights and improvised headlamps, as well as the unlawful use of road shoulders and verges.
The exercise was conducted by Officers from the Ashanti Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), the Central MTTD in Accra and a team from the Police National Headquarters.
Anauthorised devices, including sirens, strobe lights and improvised headlamps, were removed and seized from the vehicles, while the drivers involved were taken through the relevant provisions of the Road Traffic Regulations and cautioned against repeating the offences.
He said the operation formed part of ongoing efforts to improve discipline, safety and order on the country’s roads.
He added that Traffic enforcement exercises of this nature would continue in other parts of the country to deal with motorists who flout the road traffic laws.
