Dean of the Faculty of Journalism and Media Studies at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), Professor Etse Sekanku, has described President John Dramani Mahama’s upcoming media encounter as a bold and commendable step toward deepening Ghana’s democracy.

President Mahama is scheduled to hold his first Presidential Media Encounter since assuming office in January, later today, Wednesday, September 10, 2025.

A statement issued on Monday, September 8, and signed by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister of Government Communications, Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced that the event will provide a platform for the President to engage the public—through the media—on national issues, his Resetting Ghana Agenda, and ongoing government policies and projects.

The encounter will take place at the Jubilee House at 8:00 p.m., with accredited journalists granted the opportunity to pose direct questions to the President on a wide range of topics.

Speaking to 3FM News, Prof. Sekanku urged the media to make the most of the opportunity by asking questions that are both impactful and timely.

“Press conferences in every democracy must be an authentic exercise that benefits the people of this country. The media must act as the voice of Ghanaians, asking relevant and timely questions that promote transparency and accountability,” he said.

During his previous tenure from 2012 to 2016, President Mahama held several such interactions with the press, including a significant engagement at the Flagstaff House on January 12, 2016, to mark his third year in office.

This week’s encounter follows a recent meeting between President Mahama and the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) at the Jubilee House. At that meeting, the President reaffirmed his commitment to press freedom and expressed concern over Ghana’s decline on the global press freedom index, citing incidents such as the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale and rising harassment of journalists.
