The Savannah Regional Security Council has called for calm at Gindabuo in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District following the alleged lynching of a police officer.
Chairman of the regional security council, who doubles as Savannah Regional Minister Salisu Be-Awurbi, told 3News.Com that the regional security council is engaging stakeholders in the area to restore peace.
“The incident at Gindabuo is unfortunate and a threat to the security of the area. I am working with all relevant stakeholders to restore calm.”
“The peace of the area is important to us because without peace we cannot develop the area. Let me assure the people that we are working with the police and the community members to get to the bottom of this matter.”
He stressed that the perpetrators of the incidents that resulted in the tensions will be identified and made to face the law.
On Wednesday, September 16, a teacher, identified as Abu Seidu, of Gindabuo D/A Primary School, was reported to have died following an encounter involving police officers stationed along the Gindabuo-Kanchen road.
His body was transported to the Gindabuo community chief’s palace by the police officers following a request by some residents.
The police were allegedly attacked by the residents.
Three of the officers fled the attack, leaving one officer identified as Redeemer Owusu, who was allegedly lynched by the residents.
The bodies of the police officer and the teacher have since been deposited at the St Anne’s Hospital morgue in Damongo.
Police have since arrested 36 suspects in relation to the incident.
The residence and vehicle of the Paramount Chief of the Kong Traditional Area have reportedly been vandalised.
Following the incident, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has deployed a team of investigators and intelligence officers to assist with investigations and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Reinforcement teams from Damongo, Bole, Sawla, Tuna, Kalba, and the Regional Intelligence Team are currently on the ground to beef up security and maintain law and order.
All 36 suspects are in police custody, assisting investigations, and will be put before the court.
