Sekyere Kumawu District Assembly in the Ashanti Region, has resolved to use tourism potential in the area to promote accelerated development and growth.

The Assembly is determined to become an attractive national tourism destination, as well as an international prominent tourism hub.

The Sekyere Kumawu District Chief Executive, Kwasi Amankwah, who mentioned this in an interview with 3news, said the Assembly’s vision is to become Ghana’s number one attractive national tourism destination and an international model destination.

He mentioned one of the untapped tourism potentials as Bahankra Waterfalls.

Located along the Kumawu-Agogo main road in the Sekyere Kumawu District is the newly discovered Bahankra Waterfall.

The waterfall is situated in Bahankra, a settler community largely occupied by people of northern Ghana decent, hence the name Bahankra Waterfalls.

It is about 8km from Kumawu, the district capital. It has a copy rock that provides cover for people who can hide under it while having a natural experience of the waterfalls. Also, it has a number of smaller rocks around the pool where visitors can sit and relax while enjoying the cool atmosphere around the place.

It is believed that the four rivers that are interconnected and located within the area are the source of water for the waterfalls.

But, the community, with an estimated population of about 800, is not connected to the national grid and has no telecommunication network, making it very difficult for the residents to make calls, and it lacks other amenities as well.

Already, the district is blessed with other tourism potentials, including the Bomfobiri Wildlife Reserve, which can also boast of two waterfalls, three rivers, a stone bridge and lion rock, among others.

The waterfall was discovered in 2005 by a hunter, Kwame Sawakin, during his usual hunting expedition.

Speaking to the media on his recent visit to the Bahankra Waterfall, the Sekyere Kumawu District Chief Executive, Kwasi Amankwa said the district assembly is committed to working closely with stakeholders to make the district a tourism hub.

“I call on investors, development partners and stakeholders to join us on this journey to harness our natural and cultural wealth, to make the district the pride of Ashanti and beacon of sustainable tourism in Ghana,” he stated.

The Assembly, the DCE noted, had “drawn an ambitious and attractive multipurpose and multi-million Barima Sarfo Tweneboa Kodua Sports Bar and Park, a receptive facility consisting of children playgrounds and others for the Waterfalls.

He touched on other aspects in the tourism development plan for the Waterfalls which include the Waterfalls Enhancement, Canopy walkways ,Ziplines , Forest Hiking Paths and Bird Watching among others.

He revealed that several investment opportunities existed in the provision of accommodation, catering, arts and artifacts and others.

He used the occasion to invite investors home and abroad, to direct their investments to the Sekyere Kumawu District, for maximum returns.
