The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has dismissed the assertion that claims of beneficiaries delay unnecessarily when due.

Being a self employed or regular worker according to the scheme, takes between 10 days and one month for claims to be readily available.

What a beneficiary needs to do, per SSNIT, is to put in an earlier application after retirement or any of the conditions required for the claims happens.

At a media training for journalists in Accra Monday, June 12, 2023, Director of Public Affairs for the Trust, Charles Akwei Garshong relayed what needs to be done to avoid the notion of delay pensions.

He explained.that: “The issue of claims at the moment is that within 10 working days, after you retire, your claim is paid once you put in your application. So if you apply for your claims or pension today, within 10 days or maximum a month you should have your first pension hit your account. So pensions don’t delay at SSNIT. Once you’re self employed or you are a regular employee, if you retire you need to put in your claim early.”

He, however, advised employees to be conducting regular check up on their statements to see if their employees have been paying the eight amount on their earnings.

“What you need to do is to be checking your statement periodically so if you have not updated your e-mail address with us, you have to because every quarter we send statements to the accounts of people and you need to be vetting if your employer is paying on the correct salaries. Once you are paying on the correct salaries, it means when you retire you don’t have any challenges, we’ll just go ahead and process and pay your benefits so the self employed should be rest assured that there’s nothing like delay when it comes to processing and payment of their pension,” he assured.

Mr. Garshong further explained that pensions are paid every third Thursday of the month.

“And once you get onto the pension payroll, every 3rd Thursday of the month pensions are paid, your pensions will hit your bank account.”
