A flagbearer hopeful of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has expressed discontent with how the local currency has so far been handled by this administration.

At a campaign tour in the Kintampo East constituency Sunday, July 16, 2023, he lashed the government’s poor performance on the economy contributing to the Cedi’s incessant depreciation.

Ranting to party delegates, he revealed that between March and August 2022, the value of his $40 million in Cedi equivalent decreased to $16 million over that five months period.

Despite refraining from mentioning names, the Assin Central Member of Parliament alluded to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who leads Ghana’s Economic Management Team and is also aspiring for the flagbearer of the NPP.

The vociferous lawmaker indicated that it was rare for a manager of an economy seeking budgetary support from the International Monetary Fund and still claim to be a “strategist.”

He emphasised on the need to conduct a clean campaign during his address, pledging to address any accusations levelled against him and stressed the importance of governing the country with commonsense.

Mr. Agyapong cautioned his fellow flagbearer aspirants to maintain a fair and transparent campaign. He also assured that he would address every claim made against him, urging others to be mindful of their statements.

Touting his economic credentials, he noted he would be more effective custodian of the economy compared to his competitors.

He highlighted his successful businesses, which he said employs over 7,000 individuals monthly, as evidence of his ability to contribute to reducing the unemployment rate in the country.
