A Justice nominee for the Supreme Court, Philip Bright Mensah, is proposing a cap for the number of justices who serve at the country’s apex court, saying the number could be capped at 20.
The number, he says, is due to the broad jurisdiction of the court and the increasing workload on justices, considering the number of cases that pile up in the courts.
He argues that the complexity of issues, together with the volume, that come to the Supreme Court require a significant rise in its judicial strength to ensure efficiency and justice delivery on time.
Justice Mensah was before the Appointments Committee of Parliament when responding to questions posed to him at the vetting on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, on the ideal number of justices needed to effectively manage the apex court’s workload.
“…inferably, you will see that there are more cases, and as the cases build up, and they are expensive, it is only fair and reasonable that judges must be recruited to deal with those cases.
“So if you ask me the minimum number that I will recommend for appointment to the Supreme Court, given the nature of the work they do, they end resulted with so many cases.
“Therefore, I will suggest 20 judges who should go to the Supreme Court. Given the cases that are in the Supreme Court, in my humble opinion, I will recommend that 20 judges be appropriate,” he stated.
