The youth in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region are still demanding the restoration of their electricity after the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) disconnected parts of the district from the national grid due to resistance by the youth to allow NEDCo to carry out a disconnection exercise on Monday, August 24, 2026.

The entire Tongo, the capital of Talensi District, and other communities are still in total darkness since Tuesday, August 25, till the time of filing this story.

Many businesses and general productivity activities have been affected.

Residents say the reason for their protest is the persistent and constant long blackouts in the area whenever there is an outage as a result of any amount of rainfall, which they have reported to the appropriate authorities, including NEDCo, but no results have been yielded.

Though the disconnection will affect those using postpaid meters with huge debts, residents, especially debtors, say that payment of electricity bills is their civil responsibility and they must pay, but their protest is hinged on the constant blackouts.

NEDCo officials have therefore disconnected the area from the national grid until calm is restored and the problem of the blackouts is worked on.
