Ghana’s first female Attorney-General, Betty Nah-Akuyea Mould-Iddrisu, has said the women majority in Ghana are clamouring for a seat at the top of the political hierarchy, the reason Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s re-selection as running mate for the NDC couldn’t have come at a better time.

“There are 16.8 million women in Ghana, we need a seat at the top table now. This is the time for women and I think it’s the best political position. I don’t think there is any looking back,” she noted.

Speaking on Hot Issues with Keminni Amanor Sunday, April 28, 2024, she noted that the candidacy of the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast goes beyond selecting a female.

According to her, “it’s not even about being the first [female Vice President], as Naana Jane herself said”, but also an opportunity to bring a “viable genderisation into our politics because our political parties have not been very good on gender issues so this is our opportunity.”

The former Minister of Education touted the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for always setting the pace in selecting women for offices which have always been dominated by males.

“And it’s not always true to say that just having a woman is the way forward. But NDC has that reputation; we had the first woman Speaker of Parliament, we’ve always been a party that stood for inclusivity, the first female attorney general, myself,” she indicated.

The opposition NDC officially outdoored its presidential running mate, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang for the 2024 December general elections at the Kofi Ohene Konadu Auditorium at the University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA) on Wednesday, April 24, 2024.

Several key dignitaries including Members of Parliament of the NDC, the National Chairman, the General Secretary, the Council of Elders, and stalwarts of the party, among others, thronged the event.

Delivering a speech at the event, the General Secretary of the party, Franklin Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, said that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s outdooring was paramount since it marked a step towards supporting their flag bearer, John Dramani Mahama, in bringing the hope and relief Ghanaians seek.

He bemoaned how the second highest office of the land which the Professor is aspiring, has reached its lowest levels in the last eight years.

Lack of credibility, lack of trustworthiness, corruption, and governance that is perceived as a joke, filled with false promises and lies were the things the NDC General Secretary likened the office to.

“In you Naana Jane, we see an individual who is not just about integrity, but an individual who will help to restore the office to the place it used to be. …. The place where John Dramani Mahama took that office when he became the Vice President of this country,” he said.

He reiterated that the vice presidential office has become a disgrace and emphasised that with Prof Opoku-Aguyemang’s arrival, the office will be restored to its place of honour.
