The Upper West Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has held a solemn ceremony to honour the late Corporal Nornaa Jonas, age 36, who lost his life while on lawful duty in the year 2025.

The memorial service held on Friday, December 12, 2025, at the Church of Pentecost was graced by the Regional Minister, the family of the late hero, members of the Regional Security Council, traditional authorities, and others.

Charles Lwanga Puozuing, Upper West Regional Minister, while addressing the gathering shortly after laying a wreath on behalf of the government, urged officers to be of ethical and professional behaviour at every point in time.

According to the Regional Minister, the few miscreants among the police are denting the image of the service, hence the need to curtail that.

He called on officers to embrace the service with high esteem and remain committed to their lawful duties.

DCOP. Francis Yiribaare, Upper West Regional Police Commander in his opening remarks re-echoed the geneses and significance of the day.
Adding that “the day recognises the significant contributions and sacrifices made by police officers”.

“Policing is a sacrifice, and a sacrificial profession”, he said.

The Regional Police Commander laid a wreath on behalf of the Interior Minister, while the wife of the late hero laid on behalf of the family.

DDP. Alhaji Ousmane Tasembedo, is the Regional Prisons Commander also laid a wreath for Traditional authorities.

The Police Memorial Day, which is set aside to be observed annually, is meant to acknowledge the sacrifices of fallen officers who died while performing their lawful duties in Ghana or abroad, including on peacekeeping missions.

The day was first observed in November 24, 2014. The memorial ceremony was officiated by Rev. Karim Awuni, who delivered a poignant sermon, uplifting the assembly with words of inspiration.
