The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have announced the commencement of maintenance work by the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) on its gas pipeline.
A joint statement issued by the ECG and GRIDCo Wednesday, February 05, 2025, said the exercise which is beginning from Nigeria to Ghana is going to span between February 05 to March 02, 2025.
The release indicated that a statement from WAPCo said “gas supply to thermal plants in Tema from Nigeria as well as gas transportation via reverse flow from Takoradi to Tema will be curtailed to allow for cleaning of the pipeline (i.e. Pigging) and the replacement of some subsea equipment.”
The exercise will lead to a shut down of the thermal plants in Tema since they would have no gas to operate.
“To minimise the impact on power supply in the country, stakeholders in the energy sector led by the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition have procured volumes of liquid fuel for some generating plants in Tema that have the capacity to operate on alternative fuel to enable them to remain in operation during the period of the ‘Pigging’,” the statement contained in some parts.
GRIDCo has promised to put in alternative measures to mitigate potential challenges that may come with power supply as a result of the shutdown.
