Management of Kumasi-based Oyerepa FM says it decided to shut down temporarily to remove any impediment in dealing with the Kumasi Traditional Council.
The media house however states it will tread with caution going forward.
The Council on Thursday, August 25 asked the radio station to halt on-air activities until further notice.
This follows what they described as unsavory comments made by United Progressive Party leader, Akwasi Addae Odike against the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II during a show on Oyerepa FM.
However, the management, who were led by the Asokore Mampong Chief, the Clergy and the Ghana Journalists Association reappeared before the Traditional Council on Monday, August 29 to render an apology to the Traditional authorities.
Acting President of the Council and Bantamahene, Baffuor Amankwatia VI asked management to resume operations.
Speaking with the General Manager of the station a day after resumption of on-air activities, Somme Tymer Otuo-Acheampong said “we considered the business, looked at the interest of our public and our clients and realised that we did not have the capacity to go on the long haul with Manhyia. So when we went there and they suggested that if we would want to come back and have a smooth sailing with them, we decided to take the option of going off-air on Friday and go back to them Monday to get our plea accepted.”
The Traditonal Council advised management of the radio station to scrutinize persons who appear on their show to ensure they don’t level unsubstantiated allegations against Traditional authorities.
Reacting to that, Somme Tymer indicated “you don’t know what somebody is coming to say on your radio. However going forward, we are going to be a bit circumspect and ensure that nobody is maligned unjustifiable or impugned without any facts going forward.”
