Head of Communications, Ghana Water Company Limited, Stanley Martey has dismissed claims that recent flooding incidents in Weija and its environs are being caused by current spillage activities, insisting that the situation is largely the result of recent heavy rains.

According to him, authorities have been spilling water continuously since May last year but no flooding has occurred.

Speaking on TV3 NewsCentral, Thursday, May 28, 2026, Mr. Martey noted that although water is still being released, the recent intensity of rainfall across several areas has worsened flooding conditions.

“It isn’t the spillage that is causing the havoc, it is the flood as a result of the heavy rains we see recent times.

“It is not the spillage because as I said we have been spilling since last year, we have not heard anything, we haven’t stopped spilling since last year, we have been spilling so I don’t think it is as a result of the spillage, it is the heavy rains that have caused flooding from other sources,” he stated.

He stressed that the floods being experienced should not be blamed solely on the spillage exercise, arguing that the recent rains are contributing to the flooding.

“Let me correct this. The spillage didn’t just begin, we have been spilling since last year. We opened the gates somewhere in May last year and since then we haven’t closed it and we have been spilling all along till this morning,” he explained.

“Except that this time, we are seeing so many rains in recent times and you can attest to that and that is also compounding the problem,” he added.

His comments come amid growing public concern over flooding in some communities following days of intense rainfall across parts of Ghana.

Mr. Martey noted that prior to the beginning of the spillage, the Ghana Water Company Limited issued notices to residents to evacuate the area.

However, he said despite the caution, residents did not heed to the notices and have refused to leave the area.

“We have given them series of warnings on this issue and they are still there. If they can’t protect themselves, who else will?

“If you see fire and people are telling you this fire will burn you, and you still go close then it means that you have yourself to blame if it burns you and that is exactly what is happening in the area,” he stressed.

He continued: “Our expectation is that they evacuate the area long before now because every year, we keep doing the same announcement, educating them, sensitizing them and they are still living there.”
