Dr Palgrave Boakye Danquah, spokesperson for Chairman Wontumi has said the former Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman has informed him about an alleged plot by five inmates to poison him.

Dr. Palgrave disclosed this while speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight, Tuesday, October 27. He said the matter has since been reported to the authorities of Nsawam Prison.

According to Dr Boakye Danquah, Wontumi who is serving his jail term received information that the inmates were planning to poison him while in custody.

Mr Boakye-Danquah added that investigations were underway to establish the facts surrounding the allegation.

“He [Wontumi] confirmed to me today when he mentioned over the weekend that there were five purported inmates who were planning to poison him and so I spoke to the Commander and he says that he has instructed for investigations to be held and has put side those inmates to different prisons and so investigations are ongoing,” he said.

Dr Boakye Danquah added that Mr Wontumi was in good condition and remained hopeful that his bail application would be granted.

“Chairman Wontumi is fine and in good spirit and hoping his bail application will be granted,” he said.

The alleged plot has not been independently verified.

He further reiterated Wontumi’s demand for extensive changes to Ghana’s prison system, with a stronger focus on convict welfare, rehabilitation, and reintegration into society.

Wontumi was sentenced to 20 years in prison after being found guilty of allowing mining operations on his Samreboi concession without the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources’ consent.

While he appeals his conviction and sentence at the Court of Appeal, he is requesting temporary release.
