Three persons have died in an early morning crash on the Kasoa – Winneba Highway in the Central region.

Several others are also injured and currently undergoing treatment at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital.

The crash between the Hyundai Grace mini van registered GR 5899-22 heading towards Kasoa and the VW sprinter mini bus also registered GW 5477-24 and heading towards Winneba led to the death of one person on the spot and the two others dying later at the hospital.

An eyewitness, Kweku Arthur told OnuaOnline’s Akwasi Addo, that the driver of the sprinter bus made a wrongful overtaking and crashed into the other vehicle, even though the driver of the other vehicle had spotted him and driven to the extreme shoulder of the road.

“The sprinter driver was behind us from Kasoa and made an overtaking. It was over-speeding,” he narrated.

“Many got injured. Some had severe cuts on various parts of their bodies and lost a lot of blood. It happened right in front of me and I asked my master to park for me to help them so they left me behind. We called the police who came to support us to take out all the victims. The ambulance came later to convey the others. It was the fault of the sprinter driver,” he added.

Meanwhile, emergency responders are calling for the provision of adequate resources to ensure adequate and prompt support for accidents victims.

Leader of the locally formed emergency response team, Ebo Anderson, believes delay in response time during accidents contribute to deaths and is making a case for the ambulance allocated to the area to be stationed at the Okyereko police station which is closer to the highway rather than being stationed at Gomoa Dominase.

“In terms of accident we have what we call golden seconds. When there is an accident, before the ambulance sets off from Dominase to the highway, it will take some time so we’ll advise that the ambulance should rather be stationed at Okyereko police station,” he stated, explaining that the police station is closer to the highway and would aid in rescuing accident victims than where it currently is.
