The Ghana Football Association (GFA) launched the ‘Catch Them Young Refereeing’ policy aimed at unearthing young talented referees across the country.

The initiative spearheaded by GFA President Kurt Okraku is designed to identify, educate and train young talents between the ages of 13 and 16 to officiate juvenile matches within their regions.

This policy was evident at the 4th edition of the KGL U-17 Championship held at the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence with 20 male and 10 female referees called upon to officiate proceedings.

Jones Akubiem, who is was the Technical Instructor for the young referees on the team, spoke to Onua Sports on the policy and how it’s shaped the young referees.

“I’m happy this tournament is helping them in their confidence and Ghana will have more FIFA referees because of this initiative,” he said.

Juvenile referees on the day shared their experience of officiating matches.

“This tournament has given us big exposure and we have learnt a lot from this,” one said.

The inclusion of referees from the Catch Them Young Refereeing Policy underscores the GFA’s commitment to nurturing young referees, ensuring they gain valuable experience and exposure at such high-profile tournaments.
