The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has expressed commitment to bring to standard all the stadiums in Ghana in order to make them eligible to host senior international matches.
As a result, the continent’s football-governing body will provide the services of an international pitch consultant with experience in major international competitions to offer guidance in improving the country’s stadiums.
These were contained in a letter to the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
The letter comes in the wake of the bad nature of the pitch at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, evidenced during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Angola on Thursday, September 5.
The Black Stars lost by a late goal to the Palancas Negras with the pitch becoming a talking point after the game.
The stadium was also shut down by the National Sports Authority (NSA) for “routine maintenance works” after public uproar.
The maintenance works are scheduled to travel into next month.
The Confederation has, therefore, requested the GFA to seek alternative venues outside the country for the next two AFCON home qualifiers.
CAF noted that the GFA will bear the cost of the international consultant to be brought in.
It also assured that once the needed renovation works are completed, it would, at the GFA’s request and expense, conduct an independent inspection to reassess the stadiums’ suitability for future matches.
