President John Dramani Mahama has charged the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, to hold the Ghana Football Association (GFA) accountable regarding the budget of the Black Stars for their next two games.
The senior national men’s soccer team will be in action in March in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with a doubleheader.
Ghana will play Chad at home first before taking on Madagascar a few days later.
It will be the first outing of the 2010 World Cup quarter-finalists under Sports Minister Adams and in the second term of President Mahama.
Addressing the Ninth Parliament on the state of the nation on Thursday, February 27, President Mahama instructed that henceforth the budget of the team will not be shrouded in secrecy and that the nation’s sport-governing body will be held accountable for every expenditure.
“Next month, the senior national team, the Black Stars, which is now a pale shadow of its former glory, will play two World Cup qualifying matches,” he stated.
“I’ve instructed my office and the Minister of Sports and Recreation to hold the Ghana Football Association accountable to the people of Ghana as we prepare for these games, especially regarding the budget of the FA.
“There will be no secrecy in how much the government spends on the national teams. The budgets presented by the FA and other sports associations must be known by the public.
“After all, it is the tax payers’ funds that are used to fund these activities.”
The President also noted that waste cuts will be a key feature of all ministries including the Sports and Recreation Ministry.
He also announced vigorous reforms aimed at improving sports infrastructure across the country in order to return Ghana to its rightful place as a sports nation.
