Veteran Ghana coach Bashir Hayford has added to demands of a minimum wage for Ghana Premier League players.
He said this will help raise the standard of living with a lot of the players.
“Professionally, it is good because your salary should commensurate with your performance,” he stated on Agoro Fie on Onua TV on Wednesday, July 2.
The Heart of Lions Head Coach, however, indicated that players who perform well should get incentives by way of extra pay.
“So, it will be fantastic that all Ghana Premier League clubs, if possible, should give a minimum amount.
“However, when a player goes to a club, the performance contract must be taken into consideration and some more added to his salary based on the player’s performance.
“Another player cannot be said to benefit from this because he may not be playing well and costing the club.”
The former Black Queens coach, however, observed that the disparities in player salaries has to do with bankrollers of the various clubs as some have more resources than others.
He cited how Asante Kotoko’s support from Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for instance, cannot be compared to King Faisal Babes’ from Alhaji Karim Grunsah.
“This is what causes disparities in the salaries but it is all about the market.”
Bibiani Goldstars defender Vincent Atinga calls for minimum wage for GPL players
This call for a minimum wage was also made by Bibiani Goldstars defender Vincent Adae Atinga when he also appeared on Agoro Fie.
“Can you imagine a Ghana Premier League player taking GH¢1,000? To be honest, it’s very bad because you may have parents and even the GH¢1000 doesn’t come [on time].
“So before it comes, you owe GH¢1,100. At least there should be a minimum wage for players and the authorities can work that out.”
