Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has said it not factual that the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government constructed 10,800 km of roads in the country.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Wednesday, July 30, the Minister claimed that a nationwide inspection of roads conducted shortly after he assumed office contradicted the claims of the erstwhile government.
According to him, it was difficult to even locate a 1000 km of road c onstructed by the Akufo-Addo government.
“We started by first of all going round the country to ascertain for ourselves what the situation on our road sector is and we did this with all our agencies across the 16 Regions.
“The summary of my visit is that it was difficult to see the 10,800km President Akufo-Addo declared at a point in time that they have done. It was difficult to see even 1000km of roads in good condition in only one location let alone 10,800km. Obviously, what the President said at the time was not factual,” the Minister noted.
In a related development, the Roads Minister disclosed that government will only apply collection of the electronic road toll to roads that have been fixed.
He explained that roads which have not been fixed will be excluded but collection of tolls will commence on these roads once they have been engineered.
“We are hoping that this will be based on electronic platform, there will be no physical barriers on any road and the tolling will be only applied to roads that are engineered.
“Meaning that roads that have been fixed so we don’t intend to put tolls on any rough road and other things but when we make interventions then we can toll them to raise more money to maintain that and fix other roads in the country,” he stressed.
