Energy Minister Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced a major boost in Ghana’s gas production, which he says is expected to reach 120 million metric standard cubic feet per day.

This, he has promised, will ensure significant cost savings and a reliable energy supply for power generation and industrialization.

He was speaking in an interview after inspecting maintenance works at the Atuabo site of the Ghana National Gas Company limited in the Ellembele district of the Western region Wednesday, August 20, 2025.

The Ghana National Gas Company has begun a scheduled 10-day maintenance shutdown to ensure operational integrity and safety.

Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced that the project will boost gas production to approximately 120 million metric standard cubic feet per day upon completion.

“This major scheduled maintenance involves extensive work, including tasks that have never been done before. Upon assuming office, I requested an assessment of the plant’s integrity. Based on the CEO and team’s presentation, I’m convinced that this exercise is crucial for ensuring the plant’s integrity, safety, and long-term sustainability.

“Over the next 10 days, we’ll be undertaking significant maintenance, replacement, and servicing works. Upon completion, Ghana Gas expects to scale up production to approximately 120 million metric standard cubic feet per day.

“This is great news and a game-changer, as it will yield cost savings and guarantee adequate gas supply for both power generation and industrialization,” he said.

The maintenance work, which began on August 16, is currently about 50 per cent complete, according to the Ghana National Gas CEO, Judith Adjobah Blay.

“Maintenance work has already commenced, with today being the fifth day. We started on August 16, 2025, and plan to complete the work by August 26, 2025, within our scheduled 10-day timeframe.

“We’re halfway through, and I’m pleased to report that we’ve exceeded our target of 40-45% completion, having reached 50% so far. The team is working diligently to ensure the plant’s timely return to service, supporting power generation and industrial use for the people of Ghana,” she stated.

The Energy Minister is optimistic its completion will consolidate gains in the power sector while intensifying efforts in the upstream sector, driven by recent discoveries and growing interest from key players in Ghana’s hydrocarbon industry.

“The power situation has largely stabilized, with significant improvements observed. Our goal is to consolidate these gains and drive further progress. We’re not only focusing on power; we’re also intensifying efforts in the upstream sector.

“ENI’s discoveries and the Jubilee partners’ progress are promising, and other major players are expressing interest in Ghana’s hydrocarbon resources. This marks a turnaround from the decline we saw in 2019, and we’re working to sustain this momentum,” he added

The maintenance shutdown is expected to end on August 26, 2025.

The expected increase in gas production is set to drive further strides in Ghana’s energy sector.
