A senior Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Joshua Jebuntie Zaato, is certain that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) will put its detractors to shame.
Regarding the ongoing wranglings in the party, he says the NPP will soon overcome them and rise to its feet, to prove its critics wrong.
According to him, the NPP is currently vulnerable, just like any other political party, when it comes to internal elections, causing leading members who previously worked as colleagues to tear themselves apart.
He said on the BigIssue segment of TV3’s NewDay that once the flag bearer race is over, the party members will be unified by whoever emerges victorious, something he says would determine the resilience of the leader to propel them to victory in 2028.
“The party is vulnerable right now, the party is in a difficult position, and the party is doing everything it can to make sure that it solves this problem,” he stated.
He remarked that although it’s difficult for the party at this time, following the internal fracas, he sees “light at the end of the tunnel.”
“It’s difficult for you to be in NPP this morning because you’ve seen leading members of party tearing themselves apart, digging holes for themselves.”
“But I know that that is where resilience comes from, I know that is where strength come form, I know that is where ideas come from and I know this party and these people will rise up. They will put all the naysayers to shame, they will put all the people wished them [bad] to shame and at the end of the day, there is light at the [end] of the tunnel. The sweet roses of the sun will rise and the NPP shall rise,” he stated.
His comments come on the back of the party’s upcoming presidential primary, which has created a stir among some candidates and their supporters.
The NPP, as part of its reforms after losing the December 2024 elections, has resolved to elect its flag bearer ahead of constituency and polling station executives, reversing its previous practice.
This was part of the proposal by the nine-member Constitution Amendment Committee, led by Frank Davies, which was formed by the National Council of the party to review and propose amendments to the party’s constitution following their defeat.
The committee’s report was consequently tabled in amendment motions, which were the subject of the votes at the party’s delegates conference on Saturday, July 19, 2025.
Meanwhile, some key aspirants for the January 31, 2025 presidential primary have filed their nominations as the deadline is scheduled for today, Thursday, August 28, 2025.
