The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has received the election-violence investigation report from President John Dramani Mahama.

This is to allow the Office study it and proffer charges to persons that would be found culpable in the violence that claimed some lives and injured some others.

According to President Mahama who disclosed the development to the media during a courtesy call on him by the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), the A-G is also required to ensure adequate compensation is provided for victims of these violence acts as he promised to deliver.

The Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor-led delegation to the presidency presented some concerns for the President’s attention, including the need to enhance the deteriorating press freedom and the incessant attacks on journalists.

In his comments, the President noted that he took delivery of the report last week and has subsequently shared with the A-G for the necessary legal and compensation steps to be taken.

“Last week, I received the investigative report on the two incidents. It details and catalogues everyone who was affected by the violence and the circumstances that led to it.

“We have handed it over to the Attorney-General. The Attorney-General will review it and, where necessary, hold people culpable and bring them to book,” he disclosed.

The compensation, the President clarified, will be given to victims, including those who sustained injuries and families of those who died in the 2020 and 2024 election-related violence.

“What is the adequate compensation that we can give to people like that?” he said.

President Mahama also noted that electoral violence has affected not only innocent bystanders and political activists but also journalists carrying out their legitimate work.
