President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that the newly launched Ghana Infrastructure Plan (GIP) will help eliminate the long-standing challenge of abandoned projects by ensuring continuity across successive governments.
Speaking at the launch of the GIP in Accra on October 22, President Mahama noted that the initiative is aimed at promoting efficiency, accountability, and the prudent use of public resources.
Abandoned projects have, over the years, become a recurring issue in Ghana’s development journey, as successive governments often fail to complete infrastructure projects intended to improve the lives of citizens — a situation the current administration says must end.

“Yesterday I went to the Western Region, and two of the projects I visited were projects that were advanced under the previous government. I want to assure the people of the Western Region that we are going to continue and finish these projects so that we can properly utilise taxpayers’ money.”
He added that the GIP will signal a move away from “scattered, politically driven projects toward a more coordinated and long-term investment approach focused on job creation and sustainable national development.”

The President further stated that the Ghana Infrastructure Plan will receive Parliamentary backing, establishing it as a national framework that transcends political transitions and ensures long-term continuity in infrastructure development.
“The next step is to develop multi-sectoral linkages to ensure that infrastructure supports agriculture, industry, education, and health,” the President said. We also want to develop legal and institutional reforms that enhance continuity across governments, ending the cycle of project abandonment” the President added.
