The Blue Water Guard task force in the Juaboso district of the Western North region has intensified its operations against illegal mining, destroying 12 changfang machines found operating on the River Bia.
The operation, which took place at Bonsu Nkwanta–Yawbrief, was part of the team’s regular patrol to assess the condition of the river.
Upon arrival, the task force discovered several changfang machines actively being used by the illegal miners. The miners reportedly fled the area upon noticing the presence of the enforcement team.
Although no arrests were made during the operation, the Blue Water Guards succeeded in setting ablaze all 12 changfang machines to halt further destruction of the water body.
According to officials, the exercise was necessary to protect the Bia River from continuous pollution caused by illegal mining activities.
Members of the task force lamented the persistent challenges in the fight against illegal mining, citing inadequate logistics and manpower as major obstacles. They also expressed concern that miners often return to their activities soon after enforcement teams withdraw.
The Bia River, once a major source of water for domestic and agricultural use, is now said to be heavily polluted and unsafe. Despite the challenges, the Blue Water Guard has pledged to sustain its operations and continue protecting water bodies from illegal mining in the Juaboso District and beyond.
