Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi says he could have become the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) but for events in 2018.
He said he was the First Vice President of CAF, the most senior official after the then CAF President, before the Number 12 incident by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
Asked in an interview on Accra-based Joy FM on Tuesday, January 6 whether he could have become CAF President, he said: “It was very possible.
“At the time I exited CAF and football, I was the First Vice President of the Confederation. I was the next most senior football official on the continent of Africa. So it was just a matter of course that if the President was not there, I was the most favourable person to step into his shoes,” he said.
Mr Nyantakyi resigned as CAF Vice President and GFA President after the exposé and was banned by FIFA, losing his position as a member of its Council.
“So, Ghana would have had a CAF president. Although it is still possible. With the current regime of officers and the future, anybody who works hard can be the president.”
Ghana’s current FA President, Kurt Okraku, is the Second Vice President of CAF.
He is said to be following in the shoes of Mr Nyantakyi and could become the First CAF Vice President, inching close to become a favourite to succeed Dr Patrice Motsepe.
