The government has directed the National Communications Authority (NCA) to fast-track the rollout of fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks, aiming for 70% population coverage by Ghana’s 70th Independence Day in 2027.

Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, made the announcement during the launch of the 30th anniversary of the Communications Authority of Ghana in Accra on Wednesday, February 25.

“Our vision is to achieve 70% 5G population density coverage by the 70th independence celebration of our nation next year. So, the work is cut out for the regulator,” the Minister said.

“You have barely a year to roll out 5G using both the wholesale model and network-led operations and achieve 70% population density coverage.”

He added that the Cabinet has made a bold policy decision to democratize the deployment of 5G technology in Ghana. The Ministry will soon issue directives to the NCA to begin preparations for a spectrum auction, expected to take place in the coming weeks.

The move aligns with Ghana’s digital transformation agenda, with 5G technology expected to boost internet speed, support innovation, and strengthen key sectors including fintech, health, education, and smart infrastructure.
