Former Energy Minister under the Akufo-Addo government, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, has said he is the best bet for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) chairmanship.

Agyarko says the party has sunk to a level where it needs in-depth experience to rescue it from its current situation.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Onua TV’s Akua Sarpomaa at Alhaji Iddrisu House 2 polling station during the Ayawaso East by-election on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, the former Minister likened the NPP’s chairmanship contest to a party that’s been cursed and requires a super power to revoke the spell.

According to him, although the other chairman hopefuls are bigwigs in the p arty, there’s none whose experience can salvage the party from its current position more than him.

“I always say the contest looks like the NPP has been cursed and we need to revoke the curse with a god. For that reason, we need a god that’s heavier and sharper than the curse, else the efforts will be in vain. And I know after the hustle and bustle, it will end up with Boakye Agyarko,” he stated in Twi.

He, however, rejected the assertion that his expulsion from the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration will affect his chances of becoming the national Chairman for the party.

He avers the revocation of his appointment by former President Akufo-Addo only eliminated him from the government but not as a party member; saying his dismissal as Minister will not adversely impact his bid to lead the elephant fraternity.

Agyarko indicated that the NPP chairmanship race is a contest in the party and not in the previous Akufo-Addo government.

“I didn’t leave the party. I left the government so I’m still in the party and we are having a party election and not a government election,” he stated.

He was confident he will emerge victorious among his competitors, admonishing other hopefuls to remain calm and propagate their messages to the general party fold until the delegates are elected.

“I have a lot of chance just that we just started and the delegates to elect us have not even been chosen so we all have to be patient and speak to the party faithful so that they can weigh all the contestants and choose the best.”

Meanwhile, a former Chairman for the party, Paul Awentame Afoko, has expressed his interest to contest for the position, as well as Stephen Asamoah Boateng, a former Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

Also seeking to occupy the chairmanship position include Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, who is the current Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party; Sammy Crabbe, a former National Vice Chairman of the party; David Kankam Boadu, a former Spokesperson for late former Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama and John Boadu, a former General Secretary of the NPP.
