President John Dramani Mahama has welcomed back to Ghana, the 54-member team from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) that went on a humanitarian mission in Jamaica following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.
He extolled the troops, drawn mainly from the 14 Engineer Brigade, for what he described as a successful “non-combat, humanitarian mission” grounded in shared Afro-Caribbean history and Pan-African solidarity.
Among the mandate of the personnel included repairing damaged public infrastructure and constructing temporary accommodation for residents displaced by the storm. They departed in December 2025.
After welcoming the soldiers on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, President Mahama said their work was a demonstration of Ghana’s commitment to international cooperation beyond military operations, highlighting the importance of solidarity in times of crisis.
The personnel’s efforts focused particularly on roofing projects in St. Elizabeth Parish, including the communities of Middle Quarters and Black River.
The deployment followed a formal request from the Jamaican Prime Minister, underscoring the strengthening ties between Ghana and Caribbean nations through practical cooperation and shared historical connections.
