The Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing the necessary infrastructure to support agribusiness, with particular emphasis on strengthening the tomato value chain.

She made the remarks during a meeting with executives of GB Foods in Barcelona, Spain on Friday, April 17. 2026.

The discussions focused on the company’s proposal to establish a large-scale tomato farm in Ghana, an initiative aimed at reducing the country’s reliance on imports.

According to the Vice President, the project is expected to create sustainable jobs and drive economic growth. She assured that government would prioritise key proposals emerging from the engagement, especially those geared towards providing critical infrastructure to support the initiative.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also underscored the importance of collaborating with local out growers, noting that stronger farmer participation would be key to ensuring a mutually beneficial partnership.

Meanwhile, the Director of Corporate Affairs for Africa at GB Foods, Teddy Ngu, has called for increased government support, particularly in the development of irrigation systems to enhance tomato production.

He revealed that the company has secured approximately 6,000 hectares of land in the Afram Plains for the project. The initiative is expected to help stabilise Ghana’s tomato supply, especially in the wake of recent export restrictions from Burkina Faso.
