Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, has instructed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to reserve a portion of its teacher recruitment slots specifically for persons with disabilities (PWDs).
He made this known during a visit to an examination centre in Sefwi Wiawso, where candidates were preparing for their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
According to him, the directive stems from growing awareness about inclusion and equal opportunities within Ghana’s education system.
Explaining his motivation, he said, “On May Day, I learned three lessons. One was GRIDCo. Their placards were very educational on safety. Then I read in Kumasi that blind teachers are also teachers. That was to remind me.”
“So, Director-General, you are accordingly directed that you must allocate a certain percentage of your recruitment to teachers with disability in your cohort.”
Emphasizing the need for deliberate inclusion, he added, “We must have room to respond to that.”
On the issue of unpaid teacher allowances, he stated, “The other, I would have to take it up with the Honourable Minister for Finance. It’s about outstanding car maintenance allowance, transfer allowance, and promotion allowance. We’ll see what we do about it.”
The directive highlights a policy shift toward inclusivity, while also drawing attention to unresolved welfare concerns within the education sector.
