The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has expressed concern over the publication of the names of some doctors and health workers by the Investigative Committee which probed the death of Charles Amissah.
Charles Amissah, a 29-year-old engineer with Promasidor Ghana Limited was reportedly knocked down in a hit-and-run incident near the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Overpass in Accra on February 6, 2026.
He was initially attended to by personnel from the National Ambulance Service, but later faced difficulties accessing emergency care as he was denied medical care by three hospitals due to unavailability of bed.
Responding to the public naming of some doctors believed to have been negligent, leading to Amissah’s death, GMA said the development has shifted public attention away from the broader institutional failures and placed undue focus on the health professionals.
While reaffirming its support for accountability and high professional standards, the Association stressed that any disciplinary action must be conducted in a manner that is fair, transparent and evidence-based.
“The Association supports accountability and the highest standards of professional practice, but we also believe that any such processes must be fair, transparent, evidence-based and consistent with due process,” the statement said.
According to the Association, the report identified “significant systemic weaknesses and longstanding gaps in emergency care delivery in Ghana.”
It said the findings reinforce the urgent need for sustained investment in emergency care infrastructure, referral systems, staffing, equipment and accountability mechanisms across health facilities nationwide.
The GMA disclosed that it will immediately seek an official copy of the report to carefully review its findings and recommendations before determining its next course of action.
It further assured members that it would provide support to any doctors or health professionals who may face disciplinary proceedings arising from the matter, in line with its mandate to protect the welfare and professional integrity of its members.
The Association also urged its members to remain calm and avoid speculation or public commentary that could prejudice ongoing processes or damage the reputation of colleagues involved.
According to the GMA, its leadership will continue to engage affected members and relevant authorities while keeping the wider membership informed of developments.
