The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), is advancing innovation beyond the classroom, with students developing mobile applications and assembling laptops to address real-world business challenges.

Vice Chancellor of UPSA, Professor John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, disclosed this during a courtesy call on the leadership of Media General by executives of the university.

The visit, on May 14, formed part of efforts to strengthen the longstanding partnership between UPSA and Media General, while also inviting the media organisation to participate in activities marking the university’s diamond jubilee celebrations.

A major highlight of the anniversary activities is the Ghana Business Leaders Conclave, which will be convened by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Speaking during the engagement, Professor Mawutor praised the creativity and ingenuity of UPSA students, particularly their efforts at translating academic research into technological solutions capable of solving practical business problems.

“In the coming days, we are going to flood this country with a lot of mobile apps. What our undergraduate students have done in recent times is to pick research from other disciplines and translate them into digital applications,” he said.

He explained that some of the applications being developed would help individuals and businesses access services more conveniently.

“Very soon, if you want to know how much tax you are supposed to pay, all you need to do is download an app,” Professor Mawutor added.

The Vice Chancellor also announced the commissioning of a computer assembly plant by UPSA students, with the facility expected to produce up to 1,000 laptops weekly.

According to him, the initiative forms part of the university’s vision to equip students with practical technical skills alongside academic training.

“Every student who comes to UPSA must have the skill to assemble computers, laptops and phones. Fortunately, I’m happy to announce that by next month we will be launching our plant, and the first laptops assembled will be donated to Media General,” he stated.

The Media General delegation, led by Group Chief Operating Officer, Eshun Nuamah Fameye, and General Manager of Onua TV, Stephen Schandorf, commended UPSA for its innovation-driven approach to education and reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to its partnership with the university.

They also praised the students for leveraging technology and creativity to make meaningful contributions to society.
