The Ghana Water Limited has announced the opening of the spill gates of the Weija Dam to for the controlled spillage of the excess water.

Management says the controlled spillage is to protect the integrity of the Dam following the water level currently rising above the maximum operating level.  Meanwhile, the Dam has been spilled with some residents already affected and counting their losses.

In a statement issued by Management of Ghana Water Limited on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, it said the exercise is usually carried every year when the water level reaches 45 feet.

“The Management of Ghana Water Limited wishes to inform the general public that the water level in the dam has currently risen above the maximum operating level of 48 feet. Consequently, all spill gates of the dam are being opened to allow for the controlled spillage of excess water in order to safeguard the structural integrity and safety of the dam.

“The public may recall that every year during the rainy season, and anytime the water level exceeds 45 feet, Ghana Water Ltd undertakes controlled spilling operations to prevent undue pressure on the dam and avert any potential disaster,” the statement said.

The statement cautioned that the Ghana Meteorological Agency has predicted further rains upstream which would put pressure on the Dam, and would warrant a continuous spillage till the level becomes normal.

“This process may continue for some months depending on rainfall patterns and inflow volumes,” the statement added.

It advised persons living downstream the Dam to evacuate their premises to prevent any disasters.

“In view of this development, all persons living along the course of the river downstream of the dam are strongly advised to evacuate from vulnerable areas immediately to forestall any eventuality and ensure the safety of lives and property.”

The Management of Ghana Water Limited wishes to inform the general public that the water level in the dam has currently risen above the maximum operating level of 48 feet. Consequently, all spill gates of the dam are being opened to allow for the controlled spillage of excess water in order to safeguard the structural integrity and safety of the dam.

The public may recall that every year during the rainy season, and anytime the water level exceeds 45 feet, Ghana Water Ltd undertakes controlled spilling operations to prevent undue pressure on the dam and avert any potential disaster.

Management further wishes to indicate that the Ghana Meteorological Agency has forecast further torrential rains upstream, which is expected to result in increased inflows into the dam area. In view of this development, all persons living along the course of the river downstream of the dam are strongly advised to evacuate from vulnerable areas immediately to forestall any eventuality and ensure the safety of lives and property.

Management has also been informed by National Disaster Management Organisation and the various District Assemblies that plans are underway to clear structures and obstructions that hinder the free flow of water into the sea. Ghana Water Ltd urges the relevant authorities to undertake these actions as early as practicable to minimize the risk of flooding and protect affected communities.

Ghana Water Ltd remains committed to safeguarding the dam infrastructure while ensuring public safety at all times. The public is therefore urged to cooperate fully with all emergency directives and advisories issued by the relevant state institutions.
