The Municipal Chief Executive for Sefwi Wiawso, Dominic Gyasi, together with the Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiawso Constituency, Kofi Benteh Afful, and traditional authorities, have cut sod for the construction of a 24-hour economy market at Asawinso in the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality of the Western North Region.

The project, expected to boost commercial activities, create jobs and provide traders, farmers and small-scale businesses with a modern trading environment, forms part of efforts to promote local economic growth within the municipality.

Addressing stakeholders during the ceremony, Dominic Gyasi, described the project as a strategic intervention aimed at improving livelihoods and supporting economic development in the area.

“This market project is not just about putting up structures; it is about creating opportunities for traders, farmers, artisans and the youth. We believe the 24-hour economy concept will stimulate business activities and strengthen the local economy,” he stated.

Mr. Gyasi called on residents to support the initiative and safeguard the facility upon completion to ensure its long-term sustainability.

The Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiawso, Kofi Benteh Afful, reaffirmed his commitment to supporting development projects that directly improve the lives of constituents.

“Development is a shared responsibility. This market, when completed, will improve commercial activities and support many families who depend on trading and farming for their livelihoods,” he noted.

The project is expected to be completed within 36 months. However, the MP assured residents that efforts would be made to complete it within 24 months without compromising quality.

“Although the contractual period is 36 months, we will work tirelessly with stakeholders and contractors to ensure the project is completed within 24 months. But let me assure residents that in our determination to finish early, quality will not be compromised,” Mr. Afful stressed.

He further urged residents to cooperate with contractors and offer the necessary support to ensure the successful and timely execution of the project.

“I encourage community members to support the contractors in every way possible because this project is for the benefit of the people. Together, we can ensure its successful and timely completion,” he added.

Traditional authorities who joined the sod-cutting ceremony welcomed the initiative, describing it as a major step toward improving economic infrastructure and trading activities in Asawinso and surrounding communities.

A representative of the chiefs expressed optimism about the project’s impact on local businesses and livelihoods.

“Our people need opportunities to expand their businesses and improve their lives. This market project is a positive step, and we hope it will be completed on schedule for the benefit of the entire community,” the chief stated.

Some residents and traders also welcomed the project, expressing hope that the new market would address longstanding infrastructural challenges affecting trading activities in the area.

They appealed for the timely completion of the project to enable the community fully benefit from the anticipated economic opportunities and improved business environment.
