The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak acting on the advice of the National Security Council and through an Executive Instrument, has imposed a curfew on several communities within the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region.

The curfew, which takes effect from Friday, June 19, 2026, will run daily from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. until further notice.

The affected communities are Keri, Abrewanko, Abrewanko Junction, Nyambo, Nyambo Junction, Shari, Kromase, Power, Nyakoma, Odomi, Bonakye and Nkwanta.

The government has urged chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth groups, and residents of the affected areas to exercise restraint and cooperate with efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability.

In a statement, authorities encouraged community members to channel their concerns through peaceful and lawful means, stressing the need for dialogue and non-violence in addressing challenges confronting the area.

Meanwhile, a total ban has been imposed on the possession and carrying of arms, ammunition, and other offensive weapons within the affected communities.

The government warned that any individual found carrying weapons or ammunition in violation of the directive will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The curfew forms part of measures aimed at maintaining law and order and preventing any escalation of tensions in the municipality.

The curfew follows an attack in Odomi on Thursday, June 18, which heightened tensions in the municipality and prompted an immediate response from the government.

Three people were killed in the incident, while nine others sustained gunshot wounds.
