The Government of Ghana has commissioned the newly constructed Butler Barracks at Burma Camp, marking a significant milestone in efforts to improve accommodation for military personnel and modernise infrastructure within the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
The commissioning forms part of the government’s broader programme to tackle the long-standing housing deficit affecting the Armed Forces, where thousands of officers, soldiers and their families have, for decades, relied on rented accommodation outside military barracks due to inadequate official housing.
The new barracks, which can accommodate more than 2,000 personnel, has already begun receiving troops relocated from El-Wak Barracks as part of a phased redevelopment programme aimed at replacing ageing military facilities with modern residential infrastructure.
The relocation involved personnel, military vehicles, equipment and logistics under carefully coordinated security arrangements.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Acting Minister for Defence, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, described the project as a major investment in the welfare of Ghana’s armed forces.
“The welfare of our officers, soldiers and defence civilian staff remains a top priority. Modern accommodation is not merely about housing; it is about dignity, morale, operational readiness and building an Armed Forces that is fit for today’s security environment.”
Dr. Forson reaffirmed government’s commitment to investing in modern military infrastructure, noting that improved accommodation, healthcare, training and logistics remain central to efforts to strengthen the Ghana Armed Forces.
The Chief of Staff at the General Headquarters, Air Vice Marshal Joshua Lartei Mensah-Larkai, has previously explained that relocating personnel to Butler Barracks forms part of the Armed Forces’ long-term strategy to:
- reduce the accommodation deficit;
- improve the welfare of officers and soldiers;
- enhance operational readiness; and
- free up land at El-Wak Barracks for the construction of additional modern military housing.
- Modernising Military Infrastructure
The Butler Barracks project complements the ongoing redevelopment of the Central Ordnance Depot (Base Ordnance Depot), where government is constructing modern accommodation blocks, new headquarters, warehouses, logistics facilities, schools and recreational infrastructure to support personnel and improve operational efficiency.
These projects form part of a wider modernisation agenda being pursued by the Ministry of Defence and the Ghana Armed Forces.
Government has also initiated additional redevelopment projects at Burma Camp, El-Wak Barracks and the GAF Post Office enclave, including the construction of modern two-bedroom apartments and studio units to further reduce the accommodation shortfall across the Armed Forces.
Military High Command said replacing ageing colonial-era barracks with modern residential facilities is expected to improve the welfare and morale of personnel, provide safer and more comfortable homes for military families, and strengthen the operational effectiveness of the Ghana Armed Forces.
The commissioning of Butler Barracks therefore represents more than the opening of new accommodation, it underscores government’s commitment to investing in the welfare of service personnel while building a modern, well-equipped and operationally ready Armed Forces capable of meeting Ghana’s evolving security needs.
